London attack: The latest update

According to the BBC, Three people were killed, along with the assailant, in Wednesday's attack in Westminster, close to the Houses of Parliament.

Another 29 people needed hospital treatment, of whom seven remain critically injured.

Details have not been given of all the victims.

PC Keith Palmer, 48, was stabbed as he tried to stop the attacker in a courtyard outside the Houses of Parliament.

A father and husband, he was an unarmed member of the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Squad who had served for 15 years.

"A lovely man, a friend. I'm heartbroken", Conservative MP and former colleague James Cleverly tweeted. He said he had known the police officer for 25 years, as the two had served together in the Royal Artillery before PC Palmer joined the police.

In an emotional tribute in the Commons, he later described him as a "strong, professional public servant".

Also addressing MPs, Prime Minister Theresa May said PC Palmer "was every inch a hero and his actions will never be forgotten".

Aysha Frade, who worked at DLD College London, close to Westminster Bridge, also died in the attack.

She was a British national whose mother was Spanish, the Spanish foreign ministry said.

Ms Frade lived in London with her two young daughters and husband, according to Spanish media reports.

Her father was of Cypriot origin, while her mother was from the Galician town of Betanzos, where her two sisters run an English school, the Voz de Galicia reports.

The principal of the independent sixth form college said she worked in the administration team and described her as "a highly regarded and loved" member of staff.

"She will be deeply missed by all of us," Rachel Borland added.
A former neighbour, Patricia Scotland, who lives in the Ladbroke Grove area of London, said the family had lived close by for 40 years before moving away two years ago.

She described Ms Frade as a "lovely mother, a lovely wife".

"She was just a lovely person, with two lovely, lovely girls," she said. "You couldn't ask for better neighbours".

Unnamed killed

The Metropolitan Police said a man in his mid-50s also died, but no further details have been given.
Injured

French schoolchildren

Three French schoolchildren on a school trip to London were among those injured as pedestrians were struck by a car on Westminster Bridge.

They are from the St Joseph's School in Concarneau, Brittany.
The three injured pupils are expected to return to France on Thursday - two of them are reported to have suffered serious fractures, but none is thought to be in a critical condition.

More than 90 students from the school were on the trip to London.

British students

Four students from from Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, Lancashire were among those injured in the Westminster attack.

Owen Lambert and Travis Frain were struck when a car drove along the pavement on Westminster Bridge at the outset of the attack.

They were part of a group of 13 students on a visit, with a lecturer, to the Houses of Parliament.

Mr Lambert, 18, from Morecambe, is understood to have required stitches to a head wound, while Mr Frain, from Darwen, suffered a wrist injury. Two other students needed treatment for lesser injuries.

Other victims

Three police officers, two of whom are in a serious condition, were also injured as they returned from an event marking their bravery in service, the Metropolitan Police said.

Four South Korean tourists, in their 50s and 60s were hurt in a rush of people trying to flee the attack, South Korea's Foreign Ministry said. Two Romanians were also injured.

Also among the injured were 12 British citizens, two Greeks, one German, one Pole, one Irish citizen, one Chinese person, one Italian and one American, Mrs May told MPs.

A seriously injured woman was rescued from the River Thames, but no further details have been given.

Dollar drops below N400/$ for the first time in seven months

For the first time in seven months, the dollar fell below the psychological N400 barrier, when the greenback traded at N399 to the dollar in Lagos and exchanged at N395 in Abuja, lower than N410 at which it traded on Tuesday.

Thisday reports

With the gains made by the local currency in the last five weeks, the naira inched closer to one of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) key foreign exchange policy objectives of an exchange rate convergence.

The naira trades for N375 to the greenback for invisibles and at N307 to the dollar on the FX interbank market, the official window for manufacturers and importers of raw materials eligible to buy FX from this segment of the market.

The last time the naira traded at between N395 and N400 to the dollar on the parallel market was in August 2016.

The significant gains made by the naira on the parallel market, according to market analysts, was a reflection of the improved confidence in the FX market, following the sustained dollar interventions by the CBN since last month.

One analyst also attributed the gains made by naira to the Bureau de Change (BDC) operators that are awash with dollars and with little or no customers to patronise them.

He said several retail customers who used to resort to the BDCs (which realistically fund the parallel market) to fund invisible transactions now get to buy dollars at a lower rate from the banks.

“The BDCs are awash with cash. Remember that the central bank sold about $200,000 to each BDC at some point and they had also bought dollars at high rates which they hoarded, thinking that the naira would remain in a free fall.

“But with the CBN’s intervention, they are stuck with loads of dollars and little or no customers, so they have stopped buying dollars and are looking for avenues to offload what they bought at ridiculously high rates.

“Essentially, the speculative attacks on the naira has come back to haunt them and they’ve got their fingers burnt,” he said.

In all, the central bank has auctioned a total of $1.895 billion through forward sales, as well as targeted intervention for invisibles.

This amount does not include its daily intervention of $1.5 million on the interbank market.

The CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, on Tuesday expressed optimism about the convergence of the FX rates on the official and parallel markets, stating that the gains made by the naira against the greenback in the last five weeks was not a fluke.

Emefiele said he was happy that the central bank’s intervention was yielding positive results.

“I am happy, indeed very gratified, that the interventions have been positive, we have seen the rates now converging and we are strongly optimistic that the rates will converge further.

“In terms of sustainability, I think it’s important for us to say that the foreign reserves at this time are still trending upwards to almost $31 billion as I speak with you.

President Trump Travel Ban Halted by Hawaii court

A United States federal judge in Hawaii has issued an emergency temporary halt to President Donald Trump's revised travel ban, just a day before it was set to go into effect.

The decision means that travellers from the six Muslim-majority countries covered by the ban will still be able to travel to the US.

US District Judge Derrick Watson put an emergency stop to the new order in response to a lawsuit filed by the state of Hawaii, which argued the order discriminated against Muslims in violation of the constitution.

The new ban, signed by the President on March 6, had aimed to overcome legal problems with a January executive order that caused chaos at airports and sparked mass protests before a Washington judge stopped its enforcement in February.

‘Martian’ meteorites smashed open to prove Red Planet was wetter than we thought

Research into simulated Martian meteorites indicates that Mars was once far wetter than we thought. The implications of this study are huge as it not only means that Mars could have supported life in the past, but could potentially do so again in future.

Scientists have long studied whether Mars held any substantial bodies of water as this would definitively prove that the planet was once at least capable of supporting life, even if life never actually fully formed.

THAAD Missile Defense System arrives in South Korea

The first pieces of a US-built missile defense system designed to mitigate the threat of North Korean missiles arrived at the Osan Air Base in South Korea Monday night, according to the US military.

The announcement comes just a day after North Korea test-fired four ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.

China has voiced opposition to the proposed placement of the military hardware known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system , which it sees as a threat to its own security.

With North Korea upping the amount of missile and nuclear tests last year, the US and South Korea have publicly stressed the need to speed up the deployment of the technology.

It's designed to shoot down incoming missiles that threaten civilian populations, akin to shooting a bullet with another bullet in simple terms, experts say.

President Trump's Travel Ban

The Nigerian presidency has warned its citizens not to travel to the US amid ongoing uncertainty over Donald Trump's executive order banning immigration from certain Muslim-majority countries.

Nigeria is not on the list of six countries affected by Mr Trump's so-called travel ban executive order, but the special assistant to the President on foreign affairs and the diaspora said in a statement that several Nigerians with valid visas have been refused entry to the US.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa said their visas were cancelled when they landed in the US and they were put on return flights.

Ruline Steininger Hilary Clinton Supporter has died at the age of 103

Steininger died Tuesday night, three months after her dream was dashed. She was 103. Her daughter, Karen Steininger, confirmed Ruline's death to CNN on Thursday.

"She had a long and productive life and did much to inspire many women, young and old," she said in an email. "One of my favorite things that she said, as my husband was telling her about the Women's March here in Des Moines, was to please send Hillary a note after her death and to let her know that she'll still be fighting. An activist even after she's gone."

Steininger was born in 1913, before the first World War, when women could not vote. During the 2016 campaign, CNN documented Steininger's efforts to help elect Clinton -- the country's first woman to capture a major political party's nomination for president.

On September 29, Steininger became one of the first people in Iowa to vote in person for Clinton for president. She met the candidate backstage at a campaign rally.

UN envoy Nikki Haley criticises Russian aggression in Ukraine

The Trump administration has severely criticised Russia for the first time with its newly appointed ambassador to the United Nations lambasting Moscow for its military intervention in Ukraine.

Making her maiden address to a session of the UN security council on Thursday, Nikki Haley said: “Eastern Ukraine of course is not the only part of the country suffering because of Russia’s aggressive actions. The United States continues to condemn and call for an immediate end to the Russian occupation of Crimea.”

“Crimea is a part of Ukraine. Our Crimea related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns control of the peninsula to Ukraine,” said Haley, who was formerly governor of South Carolina.

Haley’s remarks at the UN echoed the tough position she took on Russia at her Senate confirmation hearings but were in strong contrast to the tone taken by the White House which has been silent on Russian actions in Ukraine. Donald Trump has consistently praised Vladimir Putin and held an hour-long phone conversation with the Russian leader on Saturday, which was characterised by the Kremlin as friendly and focused on future joint action on counter-terrorism. The new upsurge of fighting in eastern Ukraine began soon after the Trump-Putin call.

In her speech at the security council, Haley appeared to acknowledge the White House’s desire to forge better ties with Moscow, but said Russian actions in Ukraine made it impossible to lift sanctions.
